Dexter's Beat Laboratory Vol. 140
by Billie Margot ·

Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA managing editor Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic—to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery—DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.

Some may recognize the sultry lyrics to Fubu and Tobtok‘s new collaboration with vocalist Kate Wild, “Freak Like Me.” The tune is a revamped rendition of Adina Howard’s 1995 hit of the same name, and the trio have put their own stamp on the song, flipping it into a disco-infused heater primed for the dance floor.
Andromedik has been on a hot streak so far this year, releasing a slew of hits on Liquicity and NoCopyrightSounds. His newest, “Better With You,” is an uplifting drum ‘n’ bass piece with a fluttering melody and emotive vocals. His lighthearted, animated style of d’n’b is quickly distinguishable, and this latest single is an exceptional follow-up to April’s “Close To Me.”
Around this time last year, Delta Heavy and Muzzy teamed up for “Revenge,” which saw its release on the former’s sophomore album, Only In Dreams, on RAM Records. Here, a year later, Delta Heavy and Muzzy (now rebranded as MUZZ) have revealed yet another collaboration—this time on Liquicity and with Cammie Robinson. Yet again proving they’re a force to be reckoned with, the trio have crafted a formidable drum ‘n’ bass journey that’s exciting from start to finish.
Mysterious synthwave artist DRYVE is fairly new to releasing original songs, having only put out two remixes in 2018 and one other original in mid-April of this year. “City Nights” follows “88MPH,” and both are jam-packed with nostalgic synths and dramatic ebbs and flows. Though the information on the artist is sparse, a debut LP appears to be coming this summer, so DRYVE will be someone to keep an eye on.
After releasing his symphonic nine-track Hiraeth album in October of last year, Faux Tales has treated his fans once again to a cinematic experience with a new single, “Soar.” The Swiss producer leads off with a contemplative piano melody, gradually painting in layers of complementary synths. A dramatic crescendo at the two-minute marks sends the piano melody soaring—and fittingly so, based on the song’s name.
