Festival season is once again in full swing around the world after a rocky couple of years due to the global pandemic caused by the spread of Covid 19. With the return of festivals, now is a great time to take a deep dive into some of the music trends being showcased at these events.
Viberate, a global leader in music data and statistical analysis has been paying close attention to the acts and genre’s being showcased on festival stages and it is clear that dance music is the clear front runner for most common genre that fans can expect to experience at each event. The data represented has been broken down both by types of artists booked as well as genres of music most concertgoers will be confronted with. While breaking down the most popular genre’s, the study revealed the top 10 most commonly performed, which make up 56% of all music performed at events. Dance music topped the list, grabbing 8.9% of all artists booked when broken down by sub-genre. This may not seem like a lot until one looks at the next few genres at the list and sees the runner up, indie pop and house music, both tied at just 6.4% of music at festivals.
With such major dance focused festivals such as Ultra Music, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo and Tomorrowland, to name a few of the big ones, it’s not too surprising to see dance music top the list. While major events like Coachella, Reading & Leeds, Lollapalooza and Glastonbury are monumental events, they offer a wide variety of sounds for concert goers, which includes many electronic and dance based artists, further contributing the large discrepancy in percentages of genres at these events. These trends are certainly promising signs for the veteran artists as well as up and coming producers and electronic musicians who are looking take the stage at festivals every year.
