Made famous being on the cover of The Beastie Boys‘ 1989 release ‘Paul’s Boutique’, the turning point of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street is to be named after the legendary group.
The Beastie Boys are one of the most influential groups in the world of Hip-hop. Composed of Mike D, MCA and Ad-rock, the group had an extensive prosperous career comprised of 8 studio studios and countless singles, accumulating to over 20 million record sales. Due to this monumental success the turning point of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street in the Lower East Side, New York City, is to be formally named to Beastie Boys Square.
The street corner was made famous being on the cover of the group’s 1989 release ‘Paul’s Boutique’, the group’s second studio album and although the New York community board rejected the initial proposal to remain the street corner in 2014, the recently renewed application has been approved. Council member Christopher Marte discusses the rename by stating:
As many of us know, once the Beastie Boys hit the scene, it really changed the hip-hop game, I see it as a celebration. A celebration for the Lower East Side, a celebration for hip-hop, and especially a celebration for our community who has been organizing for a really long time to make this happen.
In other news regarding the legendary group, August will see a special limited edition rerelease of their iconic third studio album ‘Check Your Head’. The rare 4LP box set will be able to be purchased at participating independent retail outlets and you can find out more here.
