Bandcamp celebrates Juneteenth by donating all proceeds to racial justice
In an age where most companies signify support for a cause with a mere tweet, Bandcamp continues to step up to the plate. Today the indie-music distributor leads the music industry’s charge for the seldom celebrated Juneteenth, the date in 1865 that the last of the American slaves were proclaimed free. Also known as Liberation Day, Juneteenth began as a Texas state holiday but continues to gain traction as a possible national holiday.
To celebrate Juneteenth, Bandcamp will be donating its daily revenue to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which Ethan Diamond, Bandcamp’s CEO describes as “a national organization that has a long history of effectively enacting racial justice and change through litigation, advocacy, and public education.”
What’s more is this isn’t a one and done instance for Bandcamp, as the company also commits an additional $30,000 each year to supporting organizations that don’t only fight for racial justice, but create opportunities for people of color as well.
