Top Ten Electronic Tracks That Have Touched Me Deeply

Not in order.

Aroop Roy – “Talkin About Life”

This gem on House of Disco is one of the tracks that first got me into House music, and it hasn’t lost any of its magic to this day. The sampled guitar lick, vocal chops, and gorgeous House drums give it so much groove and soul that it’s hard to stop moving. I still play this out and listen to it all the time—a timeless classic that’s influenced my sound enormously.

Harvey Sutherland – “New Paradise”

Harvey Sutherland is one of Australia’s most respected producers, and for good reason. The man is an absolute wizard with synths, and it was difficult to pick only one track from his catalogue. However, I can’t get past the impeccable drums, strings, and synth work on this. I’m still left amazed anytime I listen to this, in any context—a masterpiece.

Daft Punk – “Touch”

As an artist with a discography only few can dream of, this was obviously a hard choice.

However, I can’t listen to this song without getting goosebumps or tearing up. Whether it’s Paul Williams’ vocals, the classic House piano, the powerful synths, or the horns, this track brings back so many beautiful memories. It always makes me emotional, and if that’s not a sign of the best thing I’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is.

The Avalanches – “Since I Left You”

Another Australian (I might be a bit biased). Like many others, I discovered The Avalanches through this track. It’s one of those songs that you hear for the first time and then listen to 50 times afterward. I still struggle to find a track I would describe as more “beautiful” than this one. It was a big inspiration for me to start sampling, and I don’t think there will ever be another Avalanches.

Låpsley – “Operator (DJ Koze’s Disco Edit)”

I’ve been hard-pressed to find anything that ticks all the boxes of a Disco House track better than this absolute heater. The string stabs, insane vocals from Låpsley, and that classic Disco groove really do something to you. Whether it’s on headphones or on the dancefloor, this song goes straight to the soul every time I listen—it never gets old.

Hidden Spheres – “Waiting”

The best way I could describe this song is as one of those that take you on a journey that feels different every time. It’s always a pleasant surprise. I started listening to House through funkier, Disco, and classic channels, so discovering this track opened up an entirely new world for me. This is a magical production—one I’ve spent many a train journey looking out the window to or walking home in the early hours of the morn.

Folamour – “Devoted to U”

Folamour is one of the biggest influences on my sound as a producer, and this is a track I keep going back to. I can’t help but smile when I listen to it. It’s inspirational, soulful, beautiful, and uplifting all at the same time. You can enjoy it on the dancefloor or while chilling at home—one of those songs that makes you realise it’s going to be alright.

Shlohmo – “Places”

This is the most chilled Electronic number on this list, but I’d be hard-pressed to find many more beautiful things than this track. I first heard it during a rough time in my life, and it not only opened up a world of music in the Chill/Ambient space but also had a positive impact on me. The vocal chops, guitar, and pads are one of the most luscious combinations you’ll hear—check it out.

Disclosure – “Expressing What Matters”

Disclosure are my idols for production and just making solid tunes—they deserve every bit of recognition they get. When ENERGY dropped, I discovered this gem and played it non-stop for about two years straight. The way they flipped that Boz Scaggs sample and turned it into a Disco House rocket with that classic Disclosure touch is nothing short of perfection.

Voilaaa – “Spies Are Watching Me”

There’s something I deeply admire about Voilaaa’s ability to mix African grooves, instruments, and vocals with House to create the most soulful, funky tracks you’ll ever hear. I’m a sucker for Dance tracks with Latin or African elements that build up over time and take you on a journey, and I haven’t yet found a track that does it better than “Spies Are Watching Me.”
