Legacy Meets Innovation in Splice’s New Sample Label, a Hub for Retrofuturistic Jazz
Imagine a legendary jazz club infused with cutting-edge production tools—that's the magic of Splice's new Signature hub, which allows producers to infuse their music with the spirit of improvisation and timeless cool.
Splice, which in 2020 was named by EDM.com as the year's best music company, is hitting all the right notes with their new sample label. Timed to coincide with today's celebration of International Jazz Day, Signature promises to be a veritable treasure trove for beatmakers and jazz aficionados alike.
The sounds of Signature are akin to velvet curtains and crisp gin martinis. Within its confines lies a sumptuous collection of recordings that echo the genre's illustrious past, from the smoky, blues-tinged melodies of New Orleans to the frenetic rhythms of Kansas City bebop.
The sultry sounds of jazz have grown popular with today's music producers and content creators, according to Matt Block, Head of Music Production at Splice.
"Beyond its foundational musical significance in all popular music, jazz has become an increasingly prevalent element within popular music," Block said in a press release shared with EDM.com. "Samara Joy, a jazz vocalist, won best new artist at the GRAMMYs last year, Robert Glasper has been working to usher in a new jazz age for more than two decades and more recently, and artists like Laufey and Domi & JD Beck are fueling a resurgence of jazz on platforms like TikTok. With this new collection we hope to both reflect and encourage the growing popularity of jazz sounds in music creation."
The new collection joins over 30 separate sample labels created by Splice, each of which pay homage to a certain genre, region or zeitgeist. Featuring six sample packs, Signature's sound library "explores the various styles, sub-genres and instruments in jazz" that have influenced the genre's unswerving cultural evolution.
These include "The Front Line," a tribute to the birthplace of jazz in the 1920s; and "Love Legacy Vocal Jazz," a bundle of buttery recordings toasting the jazz vocalists who pioneered and defined the era.
"Jazz is a foundation in music and culture for creativity and innovation," added John McNeill, Label Lead, Signature at Splice. "It has provided the soundtrack to everything from social commentary and activism to love and leisure, this genre's impact can't be understated. With the launch of Signature we want creators to have access to sounds that are not only timeless, but important."
