Listen: The xx’s Romy Taps Fred again.. to Produce Heartfelt Single From Debut Solo Album
The xx's Romy and Fred again.. have etched a new chapter in their budding collaborative saga.
This week, Romy announced the release of her debut solo album, Mid Air, which is due out September 9th. The announcement arrived in tandem with the project's lead single, a heartstring-tugging dance track produced alongside Fred again.. called "Loveher."
The new song dropped roughly eight months after their elegiac collaboration "Strong," a tribute inspired by Romy's late mother. Though the tone of the songwriting is markedly different on "Loveher," Romy's lyrics similarly spin a complex web of emotions. If there's one thing she and Fred have in common, it's their ability to capture the progression of emotions that come from losing oneself on the dancefloor amid the struggles of daily life.
In that regard, "Loveher" marks another synergistic chapter for the duo as dainty, tip-toeing keys set the tone of weightlessness, which is coupled with Romy's angelic vocal delivery. Like a sonic vignette, the track is a look back at Romy's processing of love in the early days of a new relationship.
"Loveher is an attempt to distill some of the intimate, delicate moments of the early days of my relationship," Romy shared on social media. "Of shared moments of navigating visibility and celebrating pride in our own individual ways. It felt new but also very honest to sing the words I love her, just a true reflection of who I love."
