Empire of the Sun’s “Ask That God” Album Is an Otherworldly Electro-Pop Odyssey

Empire of the Sun have returned with their fourth album, Ask That God, via Capitol Records.

Inviting their fans, affectionately called the Empyreans, back into their musical universe, the album marks a triumphant return after an eight-year hiatus following 2016's Two Vines.

The band's Luke Steele (Emperor Steele) and Nick Littlemore (Lord Littlemore) bring a spiritual approach to their music, curating an uplifting experience. The duo has embarked on a new chapter this year, beginning with a series of five previously released singles from the album.

Each release is accompanied by a visually stunning music video directed by Michael Maxxis. Filmed in Thailand, the vibrant videos narrate a cinematic story of otherworldly beings visiting Earth.

Steele describes the album as a journey of transcendence, filled with emotive sound design and storytelling reflecting the evolution of their lives. "It’s a record about realization, coming to terms with mortality and eternal freedom," he said.

The album's uplifting lead single "Changes" sets the stage for this new era, exploring the theme of rebirth. Others, including "Cherry Blossom," "Music on the Radio," "The Feeling You Get" and "AEIOU," also capture Empire of the Sun's fresh direction through euphoric and irresistible indietronica.

Elsewhere, "Television" explores the cosmic distinction between heaven and earth. It's one of three songs (along with "Changes" and "Cherry Blossom") produced in Sweden with Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare, known for their influential work with Avicii and Swedish House Mafia, respectively.

The band's knack for crafting evocative, imaginative moments through music shines further through standout tracks like the rebellious party tune "Revolve" and the breezy "Wild World." The titular track, "Ask That God," is nostalgic and emotive while "Rhapsodize" and "Friends I Know" offer a more gentle, introspective sound.

"Our records are ultimately a companion for people, positive affirmations saying, 'Take us with you on your adventures,'" Littlemore explains. "We put so much positivity into this record. It's always been about lifting people up and helping them dive deeper into their imagination."

Empire of the Sun will hit the road this fall, bringing their live show on a tour through Australia, Mexico and the US.
